This post from a publicist-turned-author seemed timely, so I thought I'd link to it: cynthialeitichsmith.blogspot.com/2011/03/guest-post-elizabeth-eulberg-on-author.htmlRegarding blog tours: I'm sure Madame Publicist has some great connections with some high profile bloggers. But it seems to me that a lot of unpublished writers have great connections with... other unpublished writers. I know some people who are going on blog tours that consist mostly of blogs with 12-35 followers, many of whom repeat b/c they are all friends or in the same critique group or what have you. Doing something like this as a favor to an unpublished friend ("Next week, I'll be interviewing author So-and-so") might be nice, but if the point is getting your name out there then it's not a particularly helpful marketing strategy. So, defintely do the blog tour, but think about how you select your destinations. Ok, off the soap box.

Excellent article, Ella. Thanks for sharing that. I'm going to tweet it right away.
And I agree with you that, like any piece of marketing, to make sure that you are getting value for your money. In this case a blog tour is free, but you do pay for it in time, and creating guest blog posts are time consuming. Hopefully your publisher's publicist can help, but even if they can't, there are things you can do even now. Find a few blogs you would someday like to tour or who's reviews you respect, and then start cultivating that contact. That way when months or years down the road when you are planning your own blog tour, you'll have blogs you already respect and that you have relationships with to send requests to.
